Latest effort to enforce the saggy pants law.
As kids lined up their new outfits on the bed for the first day of school, it was apparent that they left one key item out of their ensemble: a belt. No need to worry, Florida Sen. Gary Siplin has you covered.
In an effort to enforce the state's recently passed Pull Your Pants Up law that prohibits kids from wearing sagging pants on school campuses, Siplin stopped by Orlando area schools to hand out 200 belts to students who showed up with their pants hanging too low.
"We want our kids to believe they're going to college, and part of that is an attitude, and part of that is being dressed professionally," he said.
We aren't sure if this tactic worked. When it comes to sagging pants, the belt isn't usually the problem. Most of the time guys are already wearing belts, just not always as instructed.
Reuters reports that the sagging pants style comes from hip hop and prison culture, which is up for debate. Rapper Killer Mike once lamented that it comes from poor kids who had parents that relied on hand me downs from older relatives, and also who bought clothes that were two sizes up because they were cheaper. On the flipside of that Florida rapper Plies dedicated his song "Pants Hang Low" to opposition of the then proposed Pull Your Pants Up law saying he he sags his pants because "I'm from the hood and that's how it goes."
Either way, sagging pants are illegal in Florida and Arkansas now, so sag wisely. What is your opinion of Sagging Pants?
