Does Chris Brown Need Mental Help Or A Mentor? [OPINION]

After a heated debate  with co-workers I have a question. Do we recognize and realize that this  young man is still a child? We all have done things in our life as young people we are not proud of. We have all made that one indiscretion that could possibly color the remainder of our lives if we were not provided some guidance. In our current society where entertainment is headline news each day we have definitely surpassed a point where bad decisions will be broadcast in under thirty minutes.

In the case of Chris Brown the  jury of public opinion has tried, and convicted him.  He said he was “a kid who’s never been in trouble before” who wants to “move past this” and get out the message that domestic violence is not acceptable. We are posed with a hard question. Will we forgive him for his actions? News story after news story points out the exact details of the assault Rhianna. We know each bruise she acquired. We know what happened in the car according from both their accounts. This action made him a social pariah and a professional leper.

Will we always hold it over his head that he did this heinous act?  The public out cry to ban his music and bar him from performances rankled an out cry that was not heard in awhile.  He was banned from the BET awards according to the rumor mill.  Clearly, no one recalled his true talent and associated his job with his personal behavior. Yes, domestic abuse is wrong. Yes, the fact that he hit a woman is in fact as low as any man can go. Yet, he said he was sorry.  He stabbed himself  with the proverbial sword and said “I get it.” I sat down last night and watched as commentator after commentator bashed him for his GMA incident,  in which only 10 second snippets were shown.

The real reason that this story is so prevalent is that we live in a different media world. Chris is not the only public figure accused of assaulting a woman. He represents a “Young America Gone Wild” in the minds of many people.  Lindsay Lohan parades in and out of  court on a regular basis.  The news headlines shows a young woman misguided. Bobbi Kristina’s  ex boyfriends  sends out pictures of her drug use. Every site in America see it.   This is more an problem  of these young people not being handled or mentored in the right way. Many people were very angry with my article “Open Letter To A Basketball Wife”. This is a perfect example of why I am angry.  This young man was shaped by what he saw all around him. The false testosterone  party  that is made up of “Hip Hop” of the last few years. He has been making money from his career hand over fist since he was 16 years old. This young man needs guidance. He is gifted. He made a horrible indiscretion. The emotional taxation of the last 2 years is starting to wear and tear on him. The question about him and Rhianna never should have been asked. Period.   There is a distinction  between women who are brazenly tastelessly immoral  and live without boundaries and a young man who is learning boundaries.

You may say that there is no comparison. I say that a young man has realized his wrong and wants to reform. I say that I see a young man who needs love not condemnation. His actions clearly show someone who needs the stern and loving arm of an elder to set him right.    Kevin Powell has stepped in to write him an open letter that you can read here.

Some people have dragged Chris outside the town and have started picking up stones and started tossing them at him. Clearly, yesterday’s indiscretions were ones that were likely a boiling pot.  We are supposed to be a people that forgive indiscretions when committed. Are we going to just keep throwing stones at him as they did in old times?

I want to hear what you think. Please leave your comments.

Humor: A New Take On The “F” Word

Laughter , it’s said, is the best medicine. And there’s lots of evidence that laughter does lots of good things for us. It reduces pain and allows us to tolerate discomfort. It reduces blood sugar levels, increasing glucose tolerance in diabetics and nondiabetics alike. It improves your job performance, especially if your work depends on creativity and solving complex problems. Its role in intimate relationships is vastly underestimated and it really is the glue of good marriages. It synchronizes the brains of speaker and listener so that they are emotionally attuned.

Laughter establishes — or restores — a positive emotional climate and a sense of connection between two people, In fact, some researchers believe that the major function of laughter is to bring people together. And all the health benefits of laughter may simply result from the social support that laughter stimulates. Here is a funny take on the use of  the   “F’ word. Cee Lo Green would be proud.

Does the Black Church Focus More on Entertainment Than Preaching the Word?

I vividly recall the Sunday in 1985 my father took me to the church bookstore after service to purchase a copy of the first Christian rap CD, “Bible Break” by Stephen Wiley, an Oklahoma-based youth minister/rapper who became a recurring guest at my church’s annual youth retreats. By all accounts, my youth leaders sought to “keep it real” even as their real goal was to keep us “saved.”

By no means is “Bible Break” great music, but it is certainly memorable. I still can recite its lyrics almost verbatim.

These memories inspire much of my current work. I had the opportunity to interview Wiley while writing my dissertation. He shared with me the story of a church where an actual fist-fight broke out as leaders were debating whether to allow him to rap in their pulpit.

In dramatic fashion Wiley’s experience reveals the common belief that faith and popular culture are (or should be) diametrically opposed. Black churches have always been a place where people have come to sway, to dance, to shout and — value judgments aside — to be entertained. To be moved by the Spirit. And sometimes not.

In short, there are multiple layers of meaning at the source of what brings folks into “the House of the Lord.” Churches were the first independent black institutions. They were a place for both worship and politics. In addition to serving as arbiters of things spiritual and political, church was also a space of pleasure and play: a theater, a concert stage and a dance hall. Many prominent black cultural institutions and artists began in churches. The Dance Theater of Harlem and the Harlem School of the Arts both held their first practices in churches.

American music legends Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin began their careers in the church, as did contemporary artists Fantasia Barrino and John Legend. To this day, a common thought is that all black entertainers come out of the church. Yet few acknowledge that the church was and is a source and site of entertainment.

In today’s tabloid-driven, scandal-obsessed celebrity culture, people are reluctant to reconcile the seriousness of a “Hallelujah!” with the sensationalism, sensuality and sometimes downright silliness of Hollywood. The writer Rudolph Fisher captured this phenomenon well in a short story that appeared in what is considered the bible of the Harlem Renaissance, Alain Locke’s 1925 anthology “The New Negro.” Fisher tells a tale of two young men in 1920s Upper Manhattan. Debating whether or not to attend a local revival, one of the men ended their exchange as follows:

“Ought to be a pretty good show when some o’ them old-time sisters get happy. Too early for the cabarets; let’s go in a while, just for the hell of it… Somethin’ funny’s bound to happen. You might even get religion.”
Clearly, for these men, a revival was as much about pleasure as it was about the promise of salvation. To be sure, this illustration fails to capture all of the many motivations that fill church pews. Yet it suggests that recreation and religion are fundamentally intertwined.

Fisher’s Harlem, of course, holds a special place in African-American cultural history. Yet his stories are not solely about race or place. Rather, they show black churches to be exceptional even as they are quintessentially American.

Recent public debates around black liberation theology often portray black churches as occupying an alternative universe. African-American Christians breathe the same cultural and political air as their churchgoing brothers and sisters of other races. This is perhaps no more clear than in the realm of aesthetics. Most of the fastest growing black churches have adopted the praise and worship format that has long been popular in white evangelical and charismatic congregations. A prime case of this is Byron Cage’s “Breathe,” a remake of the Hillsong standard, “This is the Air I Breathe.”

Researchers Say Don’t Get Angry Just Pray

Furious about an unkind comment? Angry about a social snub? Say a prayer, even if you’re not religious. There have been several different schools of thought on this. When you were little your mother most likely told you to “pray for that child, or this child” Well research is starting to  point in the direction that is can be possible that we can actually affect are emotional range by praying. Think about this for a moment. Do you  stop to count to ten when you are angry?  If the answer is yes than you are well on the way to proving that theory science is after.

New research from American and Dutch scientists shows praying can help ease anger, lower aggression and lessen the impact of provocation. “People often turn to prayer when they’re feeling negative emotions, including anger,” said Brad Bushman, a professor of communications and psychology at Ohio State University and a co-author of the study.

“We found that prayer really can help people cope with their anger, probably by helping them change how they view the events that angered them and helping them take it less personally.”
In research published online in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Bushman and his colleagues found that prayer helped to control anger regardless of the person’s religious affiliation, or if they attended church or prayed regularly.

In the first study they asked 53 U.S. college students to complete a questionnaire that measured levels of emotions such as anger, depression, tension, fatigue and vigor and then put them in a situation that could elicit an angry response.

Then the students were told to read a newspaper report about a cancer patient and randomly assigned to pray for her or to just think about her. Students who prayed for the patient had lower self-reported anger levels.
In other studies Bushman, Ryan Bremner of the University of Michigan, and Sander Koole, of UV University in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, found similar results about the power of prayer in dealing with anger, aggression and provocation.

Daily Bread: Gold-Medal Effort

March 28, 2011 — by Dave Branon

At the 2009 Kansas high school state track championship, an unusual thing happened. The team that won the girls 3,200-meter relay was disqualified. But what happened next was even more unusual. The team that was awarded the state championship by default turned right around and gave their medals to the team that had been disqualified.

The first school, St. Mary’s Colgan, lost first place because judges ruled that a runner had stepped out of her lane as she handed off the baton. That meant the second team, Maranatha Academy, moved up to first. After receiving their medals, the girls from Maranatha saw the downtrodden looks on the faces of the St. Mary’s girls, so they gave them their individual medals.

Why did they do this? As Maranatha’s coach Bernie Zarda put it: “Our theme for the year was to run not for our glory, but for God’s glory.” As a result of the girls’ action, their story was told throughout Kansas, and God’s name was lifted up.

When we set aside our own interests and accomplishments to recognize that it’s better to care for the interests of others (Phil. 2:4), we see God’s name glorified. Acting with grace and kindness toward others is one of the best ways to point people to God.

Love is not blind but looks
Abroad through others’ eyes,
And asks not, “Must I give?”
But, “May I sacrifice?” —Ziegler
When we love God, we will serve people.

End of Days....Is It Closer then We Think?

You’ll have to agree with us that natural disasters are horrible things that can happen because it creates so much damage and takes so many lives. But in a way, you have to admire the hand of God, and power of the nature because it manages to produce so much destruction. Some believers would have to say that these are the "signs of the times", as mentioned in Matthew, and Revelations from the Bible. Although you may not be able to predict when a natural disaster will occur other people, like scientist may disagree and say because of past history and technology these turn of events are bound to happen.

Pole Dancing......For JESUS??????

I have truly heard it all now....I'm lost for words on this one: Read the story, watch the video provided at the bottom and post your comments.
OLD TOWN SPRING, TX (KTRK) -- Women in the Houston area are pole dancing once a month ... for Jesus. Yes, the dance moves once reserved for strip clubs are being embraced by devout, church-going women.

In the quaint turn-of-the-century community called Old Town Spring, where Victorian style shops line the streets, one business stands out -- pole fitness for Jesus. There's no preaching, just teaching.
Set to Christian music, church-going women spin and slither around poles. But the instructor and the students say it's not about sex.
"This is my second class," student Tiffany Booth said.
For them, this is about getting closer to God.
"God gives us these bodies and they are suppose to be our temples and we are suppose to take care of them and that's what we are doing," instructor Crystal Dean said
Booth was raised in church. Now, the pole is her temple.
"I do feel a spiritual connection whenever you have the music on and it's singing about lifting you up and being closer to God. You do feel that," she said.

Getting classes off the ground hasn't been easy for Dean.
"Some guy came up with his Bible and we were in class and he thumped on the door and was waving his Bible," Dean said. "People who want to sit there and judge it, you know, like well that is sacrilegious or you know. That doesn't make you a good Christian when you judge other people."
There are those who just can't get past the stigma.
"In Gods eyes, it wouldn't be attractive," said nineteen-year-old Eric Purgason.
Purgason's family runs Lord and Nature, a Christian gift shop neighboring the Christian pole dancers.
"We have to watch those boundaries that we cross over and not allow the enemy to take it in another direction," said Dee Bovati with Lord and Nature.
We found women who said the classes clear their moral compass.
"If someone wants to swing on a pole on Sundays then that's their preference," class supporter Penny Primeaux said.
And there are those who straddle the subject.
"Are you doing it in front of men? Are you doing it as for sex in exchange for money? What are you doing it for?" said Allison Hogan, who's skeptical of the classes.
But for these women, there is room for both the Bible and a little body roll in the town that touts its old fashioned ways.
"They're going to church and worshiping God and it was just a way for them to
continue that," Dean said.
Best Shape of your Life holds Pole Fitness for Jesus classes on the second Sunday of each month, for ladies who take in their church pamphlets. The classes are free. The instructor's reason? She doesn't want to make a profit on God's day.

T.D. Jakes Releases Trailer For New Movie “Jumping The Broom”

EEW Magazine Buzz editors got a sneak peek of Bishop TD Jakes’ new movie, Jumping The Broom, starring Angela Bassett, Paula Patton, and Laz Alonzo.

In the clip released by TriStar Pictures, you’ll also see actors Mike Epps, Loretta Devine, Meagan Good and more. While it looks like your typical funny Tyler Perry-esque movie, the Buzz editors aren’t sure how we feel about the “faith-based” movies these days. They’re becoming more and more loosely rooted in faith, and more appropriately classified as “cleaner-than-average-slightly-edgy” movies.

In a recent interview with the Christian post, Jakes said “There are millions of people who are going to theater who would not come to church, and we have an opportunity to just break down barriers and to reshape how we are viewed in the mainstream. We can go in there and bring our message.”

We’ll hold our judgment until we see the full movie currently slated for a Mother’s Day 2011 release.

Check out the trailer below.

Our prayers are going out to the family of the young girl, the family of the accussed pastor, and the congregation of this church and school.

Michael Clare, Bronx pastor charged with raping, impregnating 12-year-old girl, rejects plea deal

Dr. Michael Clare is accused of sleeping with a 12-year-old girl and impregnating the child.

A Bronx pastor charged with raping a 12-year-old girl from his flock turned down a "sweetheart" plea deal that came with three years in prison.

Michael Clare, 38, refused the offer from prosecutors, despite "almost irrefutable proof" he impregnated the child, said Bronx Supreme Court Justice Megan Tallmer.

"He wasn't interested," Tallmer said in court Monday.

Clare's lawyer, Paul Brenner, asked the judge to consider probation instead of prison.

"I would never do that," she snapped, citing a DNA match between Clare and the victim's aborted fetus.

Clare - the married leader of the Harvest Worship Center and principal of the associated Harvest Prep school, declined comment outside court.

Authorities learned of the alleged crimes in June, when the girl, who now 15, told her parents and police that Clare had sexually preyed on her for three years.

Clare, who is free on $50,000 bond, faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of first-degree rape at trial.

Prosecutors believe he may have victimized other young churchgoers as well.

The judge said his preaching days are probably over, though, since his name would likely be added to the state sex offender registry following any plea deal.

"I don't see how he could continue his work as a pastor," Tallmer said.

Clare's lawyer said the clergyman will be vindicated at trial.

"He turned down the plea deal because he's innocent," Brenner said.

One prosecutor said that was a mistake.

"This was a sweetheart offer considering the evidence against him," the prosecutor said. "It won't get any better from here."

Daily Bread

When I visited Mexico, I wished I knew how to speak Spanish. I could say gracias (thank you), muy bien (very good), and hola (hello). But that was about it. I grew tired of just saying gracias to everyone who talked with me or did something for me.

But we should never grow tired of giving words of thanks to God. David knew the importance of saying thanks. After he became king over Israel and had a tent constructed to house the ark of the covenant (where God’s presence dwelt), he appointed some of the Levites “to commemorate, to thank, and to praise the Lord” (1 Chron. 16:4). Many people remained there to offer sacrifices and give thanks to God daily (vv.37-38).

David also committed to Asaph and his associates a song of thanks (1 Chron. 16:8-36). His psalm gave thanks for what the Lord had done: “His deeds among the peoples” (v.8), “His wondrous works” (v.9), “His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth” (v.12), and His “salvation” (v.35). David’s song also gave praise for who the Lord was: good, merciful, and holy (vv.34-35).

Like David, we should never grow tired of saying gracias to God for who He is and for all He’s done for us. Take time today to offer your sacrifice of praise to Him.

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,
To His feet thy tribute bring;
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Evermore His praises sing. —Lyte

The heart filled with praise brings pleasure to God.

Song of the Day by EARNEST PUGH- "THE GREAT I AM"

Enjoy this song of the day and know that He is the Great I Am. Be sure to leave a post on any of today's topics. Be Blessed.

Daily Bible Verse

“[The Armor of God] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” - Ephesians 6:10-11

What about your Friends? Do they Really have Your Back?

We all know the song by the popular group TLC, "What About Your Friends?" But the words in that song were true and should make each of us look at the people we surround ourselves with a little better. It is self evaluating. This holds true in the city of Baltimore on last weekend when a young girl was shot and killed as she left a local deli not far from her home. She was walking with two friends when a gunman began shooting at them. Allegedly, the gunman had an altercation earlier with one of the young men this girl was with. Now that she is dead, it has been reported that neither of her two friends are cooperating with the police to identify the shooter. If they had an earlier argument, surely they can identify him. But they would rather not "snitch" than speak for their deceased friend. The family of the victim is pleading for someone to come forward, so that they might seek justice on her behalf. So would your friends stick up for you? Would they do what's right? Do you really know what kind of lifestyles they lead and how it could affect you? So many questions to answer. Please make a post. Share an experience and let us know your thoughts on this saddened news story. Our hearts and prayers go out the the family of an innocent bystander killed on her way home from work.

Should Worship Leaders Talk or Just Sing?

Carlos Whittaker asks, What does it really mean to "lead" worship?

Friend of Ur, Carlos Whittaker (@loswhit), has sparked a helpful conversation on his blog Raggamuffin Soul. Should worship leaders talk between songs, contribute to the teaching within the gathering, and tell stories to draw the congregation toward God? Or, should they stay out of the way and simply sing? Whittaker, a worship leader himself, has some thoughtful remarks on the question. Read his post here.
The comments have been particularly interesting with folks on both sides.
Andrew says:

More than happy for the Worship leader to talk between songs as long as its connected to the songs/service/message/theme of the service. Everything that’s said should point people towards God and not distract them from entering into His presence.
On the other side, Katie Ristow says:

So there’s gotta be some speaking instruction, but I’ll you my biggest pet peeve: when a worship leader talks before and after each song. Worship isn’t about the leader and what he or she is feeling, but about the worshiper and Jesus. When the worship leader talks too much, it can feel like they’re interrupting the conversation I’m having with Jesus.
Jon takes a middle road with a focus on Scripture:

Be simple and start by just reading Scripture that goes with the song you either just sang or are about to sing. Don’t elaborate, just read it out loud and sing.
JCB says:

At Soul Survivor (for those not in the know, yearly youth conferences in the UK, It’s where Tim Hughes/Matt Redman/Ben Cantelon started off.) I’ve never heard a worship leader talk. And you know what? It feels great. Of course, some guidance isn’t bad, but I get really tired of the “we’re here together tonight”-blabla. I *know* why we’re here together tonight, otherwise I wouldn’t be here.

What do you think? And is your view a matter of personal preference and opinion, or do you find some biblical or theological basis for how much a worship leader should talk?

Daily Bread: Free Compliments

During a time of economic crisis and depressing news, two students at Purdue University decided to lift the spirits of people on campus with some encouraging words. For two hours every Wednesday afternoon, Cameron Brown and Brett Westcott stood along a busy walkway holding a large “Free Compliments” sign and saying nice things to everyone who passed by. “I like your red coat.” “Cool snow boots.” “Very nice smile.” Some students said they deliberately walked past “the compliment guys” every Wednesday just to hear a kind word.

I was struck by these two young men who looked at people with the goal of commending them, rather than finding fault or being critical. Is that how I, as a follower of Christ, view others each day?

Instead of being like the person who is focused on evil and whose speech is “like a burning fire” (Prov. 16:27), we can take a different approach, knowing that what we say begins deep inside us. “The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips. Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones” (vv.23-24).

Kind words may be free, but they give a priceless lift of spirit. Why not encourage someone today?

The power in words can build up or tear down—
Create a big smile or produce a sad frown;
So in all your contacts with people each day,
Be sure to encourage in all that you say. —Fitzhugh

A gentle word of compliment falls lightly
but it carries great weight.
