CNN Anchor Comes Clean In New Book

posted by elev8.com

I’m an avid CNN watcher and a supporter of the anchors Don Lemon and TJ Holmes.  It is great that I’m getting the top news from men who are handsome and nice eye candy.  Secretly, I sometimes can’t tell them apart.  I like them both and wouldn’t want to choose who I like more. However, each man has his own style and story.  Because we see them on a regular basis, we have the opportunity to “get to know” them professionally and personally.  I’m sure Don Lemon never imagined how personal he would get.

On Sunday, The New York Times published an up close and personal article with Lemon in which he came out and revealed his was gay.  In his new book, Transparent, we get to know more about his life and career.  The Louisiana native decided while writing this inspirational book, coming out was important although he was hesitate.  He admitted he was scared and afraid that people would ostracize him once he came clean.  In his interview with New York Times,   he also spoke about his concerns with the reaction by the African-American community.

It’s quite different for an African-American male,” he said. “It’s about the worst thing you can be in black culture. You’re taught you have to be a man; you have to be masculine. In the black community they think you can pray the gay away.” He said he believed the negative reaction to male homosexuality had to do with the history of discrimination that still affects many black Americans, as well as the attitudes of some black women.
“You’re afraid that black women will say the same things they do about how black men should be dating black women.” He added, “I guess this makes me a double minority now.”

Since his public confirmation, blogs and social media sites have commented on Lemon’s coming out.  Lemon also used his twitter to inform his 95k plus followers and thanked them this evening for their support.
What do you think of his announcement? Do you think  Don Lemon’s announcement will motivate others who have been afraid to come out? Do you care? We would love to hear from you.
